A few months ago, while I was preparing some cookies, and was time to add the baking powder, the container was empty! UGH! I was like, NOOOOOO! So, I put on my thinking cap and searched “Can you make baking powder?” Lo and behold a million results came up as a loud resounding YES!! And it’s super easy too!

I had no idea what baking powder consisted of. And come to discover, it only requires 3 simple ingredients. The word on the street says that homemade baking powder doesn’t have the metallic taste store-bought baking powder does. I can attest to that!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED FOR HOME BAKING POWDER
Baking soda: I used a good quality baking soda.
Cream of tartar: I used your basic cream of tartar.
Corn starch: I used organic cornstarch.
HOW TO MAKE BETTER THAN STORE BOUGHT BAKING POWDER STEP BY STEP

STEP 1: THE MAD SCIENTIST
All you need to do is mix together one part baking soda, one part corn starch and 2 parts cream of tartar. I usually place the ingredients in a zip loc bag and shake shake shake until well combined.
Example: 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon corn starch, and 2 teaspoons cream of tarter. You can increase the measurements to make more. There is a feature in the recipe card below that automatically convert the measurements for doubling and tripling the recipe.
WHAT IS HOMEMADE BAKING POWDER?
Making your own baking powder will safe you a few pennies as well as being more healthy. To create baking powder, you will need sodium bicarbonate, an acid and stabilizer. The baking soda is the bicarbonate, the cream of tartar is the acid and the corn starch is the stabilizer. The corn starch prevents moisture form building.
STORAGE
Simply store your better-than-store-bought baking powder in an airtight container such as a mason jar or reuse and empty spice jar. Be sure to thoroughly clean out the spice jar before using it.
